NCC pips NITDA, NIPOST to Pantami’s directive on Digital Economy department

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has beaten the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, and the Nigerian Postal Services, NIPOST in creating a new department, digital economy which was directed by the minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Ibrahim Pantami.

The Commission, in its tradition of championing the development of the sector, created the department before the deadline. The ministry had directed that all departments under it should create a digital economy department to accelerate the Federal Government’s economic agenda

Announcing the development, new Director Public Affairs of NCC, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, said The Governing Board of the Commission approved the creation of the new department at its last meeting. The department is strategically and structurally placed under the Office of the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of NCC.

He quoted his EVC as saying that, “placing the newly-created department under my office, also underscores the importance the Commission places on the need to successfully drive the overall national digital economy strategy of the government through ensuring its effective monitoring and supervision.”

Danbatta explained that in addition to working with the eight pillars of the National Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) document, the Broadband Implementation Unit in the Commission, which was placed under the Special Duties Department and all the staff of the Unit, are now to move to the newly-created Digital Economy Department.

Already, Engr. Babagana Digima, an Assistant Director in the Special Duties Department has been moved and designated as the pioneer Head of the new department.
